When Is an Extraction Needed?
Dr. Sandhu always tries to save a natural tooth first. But there are situations where extraction is the right decision:
Advanced gum disease has caused too much bone loss to support the tooth
A tooth is impacted or causing damage to neighboring teeth
Preparation for dentures or another restoration
Types of Extractions We Perform
- Simple extraction: the tooth is visible above the gumline and removed with forceps after the area is numbed. Fast and predictable.
- Surgical extraction: used when a tooth is broken below the gumline, impacted, or has curved roots. A small incision allows access. Still done under local anesthetic in our office.
- Alveoloplasty: after one or more extractions, this procedure smooths and reshapes the jawbone to improve healing and ensure a comfortable denture fit.
What to Expect
- The tooth and surrounding area are fully numbed before treatment
- You will feel pressure during the extraction but not sharp pain
- Dr. Sandhu places gauze and gives you clear aftercare instructions
- Most patients feel back to normal within two to three days
After Your Extraction
Bleeding, swelling, and mild discomfort in the first 24 to 48 hours are normal. Follow the aftercare instructions Dr. Sandhu provides, avoid straws and smoking for the first few days, and contact us if you have any concerns.

The injection to numb the area is the sharpest sensation. Once you are numb you will feel pressure but not pain. If you feel anything sharp at any point, signal Dr. Sandhu immediately.
The socket closes over within one to two weeks. Bone healing takes longer, but most patients feel comfortable within a few days.
A dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms after extraction is dislodged before healing is complete. It causes significant pain. Avoiding straws, smoking, and spitting forcefully for the first few days reduces the risk substantially.
For most teeth, yes. A gap left by a missing tooth allows neighboring teeth to shift and can affect your bite and bone over time. Dr. Sandhu can discuss options including dentures and implant restorations.
